Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of autism severity, social maturity, behavior problems and maternal depressive symptoms and their impact on the parenting stress among mothers of infants with ASD. The subjects were 71 mothers of infants age 1-5 with ASD. The K-PSI, CARS, SMS, CBCL 1.5-5, and BDI were used as the measuring instruments. The results of this study were as follows: First, independent variables, with the exception of social maturity, had positive correlations with parenting stress. Second, independent variables significantly explained the variance in parenting stress. Among these, externalizing behavior problems and maternal depressive symptoms significantly predicted parenting stress. As a result of hierarchical multiple regression, social maturity and behavior problems explained additional variance, controlling for autism severity. Moreover maternal depressive symptoms explained additional variance, controlling for other independent variables. This study verified the fact that externalizing behavior problems and maternal depressive symptoms had significant effects on the parenting stress among mothers of infants with ASD.
